Terms
Last updated: July 28, 2026
These are the terms for using LettersPractice — the free tier and the one-time lifetime purchase — written as plainly as we can. By using LettersPractice you agree to them.
Who's agreeing
LettersPractice is built for a child to use alongside a parent or caring adult, and accounts are created and managed by that adult. Children can't agree to terms themselves — so if you set up or supervise an account for a child, you accept these terms on their behalf and you're the responsible account holder.
Using LettersPractice
We grant you a personal, non-transferable license to use LettersPractice for your own family's learning. Use it with your kids as much as you like, within these terms.
What's ours, and what's open
LettersPractice is built on top of Skuilder, our open-source courseware engine. We want to be precise about what is and isn't open:
- The engine is open source. The software that runs the app is the same code published in our public repository, under its own open-source license — you're free to use it on those terms.
- The content the app serves is ours. The LetterPeople characters and their artwork, the curriculum and its sequencing, the audio, the written copy, and the LettersPractice name and look are proprietary.
Please don't reverse-engineer, scrape, extract, or redistribute the LetterPeople, the curriculum, or our other proprietary content, and don't use them to build a competing product. Building on the open-source engine itself is welcome — that's what it's there for.
None of this affects our promise that you keep access to your course if we ever wind down (see our privacy page and our mission). Continued access for your family is not the same as a license to redistribute — both can be true at once.
Fair use of accounts
A few asks:
- Recall always that any specific day's usage is low-stakes. Regular usage should be challenging, but mostly relaxed and enjoyable. If kiddo is stalling or distracted, roll with it.
- One household per account, and keep your login to yourself. Sharing will distort the process anyhow, as abilities of different kids will confuse the system.
- Starting over on a fresh account won't get you further, for what it's worth — the free tier is measured by what your child can read, so a new account simply re-treads the same ground. If you reach the end of it and want to keep going, the one-time price is the path. If there's a real barrier — cost, access, anything — just email and ask. We'd rather hear from you than lose you.
- Please don't use the app to harm others, to break the law, or to scrape/automate against the service.
The free tier
A large part of LettersPractice is free permanently, and it is bounded by progress rather than by time: your child keeps learning new letters and letter teams until they can sound out about 1,000 different words. There is no trial clock and no session budget.
After that point, everything already introduced stays free and usable for good — the practice, the reviews, and every word those letters unlock. Nothing is taken away and nothing expires. What the one-time payment adds is the material that comes next: the remaining letters and letter teams, the later lessons, and the words they open up. The exact size of the free tier can change.
Buying lifetime access
The full version of LettersPractice costs $20 — once. Payment is handled by Stripe; we never see or store your card details. There is no subscription, no renewal, and nothing else to buy: no upsells, no premium tier, no in-app purchases.
- Lifetime means lifetime. Your purchase covers your family's account for as long as LettersPractice exists — not "the lifetime of this version" or any other fine-print reading. We don't promise to operate forever, but if we ever wind down, our sunset plan is designed to keep your course usable: an export of your data and continued access to the course materials.
- Refunds. If it turns out not to be working for your family, email us within 30 days of purchase and we'll refund you — no hoops.
As-is, and limits
We build LettersPractice with real care, but we offer it as-is: we can't promise it will be perfect, uninterrupted, or error-free, and we make no warranties beyond what the law requires. To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for indirect or incidental damages arising from using — or not being able to use — the app. Nothing here limits rights you have that can't be waived.
Ending things
You can stop using LettersPractice at any time. We may suspend or close an account that abuses these terms — for example, extracting our content or automating against the service — ideally after a friendly heads-up.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. When we make a meaningful change, we'll update the date above and, where it matters, let you know. Continuing to use the app means the updated terms apply.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Prince Edward Island, Canada, and any disputes will be handled by the courts located there.
