Privacy

LettersPractice is a small, family-run reading app, built to be used by a child alongside a parent or caring adult — accounts are set up and managed by that adult, not by children directly. This page explains, in plain language, what we collect, why, and what we'll never do with it — including our promise to never use a child's information for advertising or profiling. If anything here is unclear, email colin@letterspractice.com and a real person (me) will answer.

The short version

  • We collect the minimum we need to run the app and let your child pick up where they left off.
  • We do not sell, rent, or broker your data. Not now, not ever.
  • We don't run advertising or cross-site trackers. For basic analytics we use GoatCounter — a privacy-friendly, cookieless tool that counts visits without collecting personal information.

What we collect

  • Your account — the email address you sign up with, a username, and a password (stored hashed, never in plain text). We also note how the account was created (email and password, or Google) and the type of browser it was created in, which helps us see whether signing up works well in apps like Facebook's built-in browser.
  • Sign in with Google (optional) — if you choose it, Google tells us your email address and confirms it's yours. Google also sends your name and profile picture; we don't store those. We keep only the email address, as your account's login, and may note that the account uses Google sign-in. We don't get access to your Google account, contacts, or anything else.
  • Your child's learning profile — an approximate age and their progress through the curriculum. The age is chosen on a slider in roughly six-month steps (under 2, 2, 2½, 3, and so on past 5), not an exact date of birth, and it's used only to pitch the starting difficulty. Progress is kept as aggregate performance statistics for the sounds and patterns practiced. We don't ask for or store your child's name.
  • Payment — if you buy lifetime access, payment is handled by Stripe. We never see or store your card number.
  • Access & purchase status — whether you're on the free tier or have lifetime access, how many words your child's letters make readable, and a count of practice sessions used. This is the bookkeeping that lets us tell where the free tier ends.
  • The mailing list — if you sign up for email updates, we store your email address for that purpose only.
  • Basic technical data — like any website, our server keeps ordinary request logs needed to run the service and keep it secure.

Who we share it with

We rely on a few trusted services to operate, and share only what each needs to do its job:

  • Stripe — to process the one-time payment.
  • Brevo — to send account emails (like sign-in links) and, if you opted in, list updates.
  • GoatCounter — privacy-friendly, cookieless visit analytics (no personal data).
  • Google — only for the optional "Sign in with Google" button. We don't send Google any of your data. The button is loaded from Google on the log-in and sign-up pages only, so Google can see visits to those two pages, whether or not you use it; it isn't loaded anywhere else in the app.
  • Our hosting (DigitalOcean) — where the app and its database run.

That's the whole list. We do not share your information with advertisers, data brokers, or anyone else.

Where your data lives

LettersPractice is local-first: your account and your child's learning data live on the device you use, and sync two ways with our server. We keep that server copy because it's what lets your child continue on another device and keeps progress from being lost — it's a necessary part of how accounts work across devices, not an extra collection of data.

Email

If you join our mailing list, we'll send occasional updates — new posts or notable product news, and nothing more. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can leave at any time. We don't share the list.

Your control

You can ask us to show you, correct, or delete the information we hold about you or your child at any time. Email colin@letterspractice.com.

Changes to this page

If our practices change in a way that matters, we'll update this page and email subscribers before the change takes effect. The "last updated" date above always tells you when it last changed.
